On discoloration teeth becomes yellow, pale, discolored and even stained. There are many factors that affecttooth discolorationranging from unhealthy habits to high concentration of fluoride.
Tooth discoloration can of two types- extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic discoloration is caused by the substances we put in our mouth whereas intrinsic discoloration is caused by conditions in the body which influences the teeth color.Let us first try to understand what causes teeth discoloration in humans.Certain food and drinks contains pigments that cause stains on our teeth. Common example includes tea, coffee and wine. Cherries, pomegranateand blue berries causes discoloration of teeth due to presence of pigments within them.
Smoking and chewing tobacco leaves your teeth discolored. Insufficient brushing is also one of the major causes for teeth discoloration.High levels of fluoride in drinking water leaves tooth discolored. Children are prone to fluorosis because they consume fluoride toothpaste, which stains their teeth.Medications such as antihistamines, antidepressants and anti-hypertensive drugs can cause discoloration. Pregnant women taking tetracycline antibiotics can cause discoloration of baby’s teeth. Children who take antibiotic tetracycline can suffer from intrinsic tooth discoloration.As people grow old the enamel on the teeth thins by wear and tear, which causes the inner yellow dentine layer to appear.
Some people have whiter enamel due to genetics.Over brushing with hard bristle toothbrush can cause quick wear and tear, causing the yellow dentine layer to show up. Dental materials like amalgam used for fillings can darken the color of enamel itself.To prevent your teeth from discoloration, brush and floss your teeth regularly. Rinse your mouth thoroughly by water after consuming drinks like tea, coffee, wine and soft drinks.Do not over brush; use a soft bristle toothbrush to clean the teeth. Visit your dentist at least twice a year. Quit/cut on smoking and drinking wine. Consume drinking water that has less level of fluorides.
